Angry (and other) elephants
Coats of arms become in the late middle ages a marvelous and creative playground for designers. The long known coats arms of the nobility remain more or less unchanged, but wealthy citizens fancy their own new coats of arms. But even more fascinating are the invented ones for the princes and rulers in the outer world. The examples in a manuscript from Konstanz are ascribed to the princes Marco Polo and other travellers meet in the east. And among the many used motive the elephants is a favorite one. Even the angry elephant got his place!
